The question comes up regularly once a business starts managing everything through Microsoft 365: what do we do with our servers? Some organisations don’t want to move them. Others can’t, for regulatory or data sovereignty reasons. Others have invested in recent hardware that doesn’t belong in a datacentre.
Azure Arc addresses that situation precisely.
What it changes in practice
Without Azure Arc, managing an on-premises server requires either being physically present or using a patchwork of remote administration tools that are hard to maintain and low on visibility. Your local infrastructure sits on one side, your cloud on the other, with no common view.
With Azure Arc, your on-premises servers appear in the Azure portal exactly like cloud resources. You can see their state, apply policies, push updates, and manage access, all from one place, with the same tools you already use for everything else.
What doesn’t change: your data stays physically on your premises. Azure Arc sends management metadata to Microsoft (state, logs, policy compliance), not your files or databases.
Why this matters for data sovereignty
Data sovereignty is a real constraint for some sectors (healthcare, finance, regulated industries) and a legitimate preference for many others. Azure Arc lets you reconcile that requirement with the benefits of cloud administration: automation, consistent security policies, centralised visibility. You no longer have to choose between control and modern tooling.
How it fits with what you already have
Azure Arc works independently of Microsoft 365. If you have both, which is often the case, you can manage from Azure both your on-premises infrastructure and, through Intune and the M365 tools, your devices and users. The view is coherent even though the technical layers are separate.
For clients who have Microsoft 365 and a server room, it is often the natural complement: the cloud manages identities and applications, Azure Arc manages the servers, and everything is visible through Microsoft’s tools.
What we do in practice
When we take on servers through Azure Arc, we enrol your machines in Azure, configure the management policies (updates, security, access), and run monitoring from the cloud. If something goes wrong, we see it before you do.
The difference from traditional on-premises management: visibility is better, response is faster, and you don’t need to call us to find out whether your servers are healthy. We get in touch if they aren’t.
