The question of where your data should live often weighs heavily in that choice. On-premises deserves to be served on its own terms, not treated as a transitional step before the cloud.
What a managed on-premises infrastructure covers
Managing on-premises is not just “having a server”. It is holding the whole together: the network and its access, the servers and virtual machines, local identities and access, printing, the physical firewall, local backup. Well managed, these elements are as reliable and as closely followed as a cloud environment.
The cloud, where it really adds value
Conversely, some things gain from leaving your walls: an isolated server that creates a risk if it fails, an application that can be hosted elsewhere, a continuity need the cloud serves better. Migrating what makes sense, keeping the rest, is often the best combination.
The right answer is rarely “all or nothing”
Most organisations live very well with a mix of the two. What matters is not the location in itself, it is that the whole is coherent and managed by a single point of contact, who knows what runs where and why. Migration then stays an open possibility, to act on when it brings a clear benefit, never a forced step.
